Edited by Jenny Gaschke.

The sea through the eyes of Dutch and Flemish masters, 1550-1700.

The sea has always held immense significance, both social and economic, for the inhabitants of the Low Countries - the modern Netherlands and Belgium. This was especially so between the mid-sixteenth and late seventeenth centuries, when artists from both Holland and Flanders sought to explore the sea in its various forms, endowing it with new-found legitimacy as subject matter.

In this beautiful book, published to accompany this exhibition, well-known art historians introduce the themes of the collection in a series of essays. The catalogue section comprises a short biography of each artist, followed by a full discussion of each of their pictures, its provenance and related scholarly literature.
